Keep watch: koalas can be spotted in eucalyptus forests and at Queensland’s wildlife sanctuaries

Wildlife watch

Koalas are an Australian icon. They’re not easy to see in the wild because they can sleep, tucked in the crook of a tree, for over 18 hours each day. So watch them at one of Queensland’s wildlife sanctuaries such as Currumbin, Lone Pine or Australia Zoo. Magnetic Island is also home to the country’s largest colony of wild koalas.

Tropical shores are a magnet for sea turtles. At Mon Repos, near Bundaberg, the southern late spring and summer months (November to March) are the nesting period for the largest population of loggerhead turtles in the South Pacific. See them safely and ethically on a tour from the Turtle Centre.

Queensland has more than 6,000km of coastline, so you can expect plenty of wildlife encounters offshore. Humpback whales are a highlight at Whale Heritage Site Hervey Bay between June and October, when the sheltered waters near K’gari (Fraser Island) become a nursery for whale calves.
