Tokyo ranks as the world’s safest city for the third time

The Asia-Pacific region has once again demonstrated its commitment to safety, with Tokyo securing its position as the world's safest city for the third consecutive time. The Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) 2019 Safe Cities Index unveils Tokyo as the leader, followed closely by Singapore and Osaka. Comprised of 60 cities, the index evaluates various factors including infrastructure, health, personal security, digital security, and for the first time, environmental factors and "urban resilience." Tokyo's ability to weather shocks and recover swiftly has solidified its position at the helm.

In addition to the Asian dominance, European cities have also made impressive strides in safety. Amsterdam climbed to the fourth position, while Copenhagen shares the eighth spot with Seoul. Furthermore, Sydney, Toronto, Washington, DC, and Melbourne join the top 10, ensuring a diverse representation in the list.

Europe boasts six cities on the list of the top 20 safest in the world, with Stockholm at number 12, London at 14, Frankfurt coming in 16th, and Zurich sharing the 18th position.

When comparing the average global safety score of 71.2, only two out of the 14 European cities featured in the Index, namely Istanbul and Moscow, fall below it. This fact was pointed out by Irene Mia, the esteemed global editorial director of The Economist Intelligence Unit.

Despite showing strong performance in the domain of health security, European cities tend to lag behind when it comes to digital security. Interestingly, London stands out as the sole European city breaking into the top 10 for this particular category.

Contrastingly, cities such as Lagos, Caracas, Yangon, Karachi, and Dhaka occupy the lower end of the safety scale, according to the index provided by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
